Helpful Tips & Useful Information about Roofing Services & Contractors

Q. How can I identify potential trouble with my roof?

A. Signs of problems are typically encountered on roofs that are 15 years old or more. Look for these indicators:

  • Loose or missing shingles
  • Damaged flashing (pieces of metal or roll roofing that is wrapped around vent pipes, chimneys and adjoining walls to prevent water seepage and leakage)
  • Buckling & curling (shingles are bent up in the middle or curled up at the corners)
  • Blistering & rotting (bubbles that are caused by moisture in the shingles appear on the surface of asphalt roofing)

Q. What should I do if I see these signs?

A. In some cases, these problems can be fixed without replacing the entire roof. In other cases, a complete re-roof is required. Our roofers – not salesmen – will determine what is needed for your particular roof. In any situation, the key is to find problems early and have a qualified roofer deal with them immediately.

Q. How do I find a contractor?

A. Ask friends, family and neighbours for recommendations. Contact the Southern Interior Construction Association, the Better Business Bureau or the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce.

Q. What questions should I ask before hiring a roofing contractor?

A. You want to establish the contractor's professionalism and high standards of quality:

  • How long has the contractor been in business?
  • Does the company have a solid reputation for excellence?
  • Are your contractor's staff trained, licensed roofing professionals?
  • Does your contractor use only first quality materials?
  • Will your contractor give you written warranties for labour and materials?
  • Will your contractor guarantee job satisfaction?
  • Will your contractor stand behind the work after the project is completed?
  • Does your contractor carry workman's compensation, liability protection and insurance against damage to your or your neighbours’ property?

Q. What should I know when choosing shingles?

A. There are three basic types of shingles:

Asphalt Shingles are the most popular because they are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. Most homeowners choose an asphalt shingle because its life expectancy is 20+ years.

Premium Asphalt Shingles provide a more distinctive appearance and carry a longer manufacturer's warranty. The life expectancy of these shingles is 50+ years. They come in many unique styles, which are more attractive but also more expensive than the basic asphalt.

Cedar Shingles and Shakes are listed in the Green Consumers Guide as being completely renewable. They are very attractive; however, their higher cost makes them a less popular choice. In fact, cedar shake conversions to asphalt shingles are very popular now due to the fire hazard and insurance concerns with cedar roofing.
